Project Description

Study Objective

The project aims to assess old and informal buildings from an engineering and construction perspective, to evaluate their condition and make appropriate decisions regarding whether to renovate or demolish them. This is done through practical and field tests on reinforced concrete, identifying reinforcement, and assessing buildings with issues caused by poor construction or soil problems, which have led to cracks and structural failures in the buildings under study.

Project Implementation Methodology
  1. Receive site layouts and project-specific documents, and gather all available maps and related information such as architectural and structural plans.
  2. Conduct several field visits to collect data and perform on-site assessments of the damaged buildings to determine the extent of damage and the required laboratory and field tests.
  3. Perform laboratory and field tests to determine the strength of reinforced concrete and the percentage of steel, in addition to soil testing to identify any issues related to expansion or compression that may cause subsidence.
  4. Study the structural plans, if available, in light of the results of the field and laboratory tests and make the necessary recommendations, whether for renovation or demolition.
